Story: 
The day of the race dawned cold and clear. A few low clouds scuttled across the sky and mists clung to the valleys between the mountains. Snow still lay scattered over the infield and the track, having not quite melted over the past few days. Nala arrived several days before, horribly jet-lagged from her trip to Australia and with dark circles under her eyes. She still managed to settle Tango into her stall without much fuss, setting up a warm bed to help keep away the bite of the chill. 

After Tango had sufficiently calmed down, Nala took her down to the track for a quick blowout before the big day. This big, new, exciting track was an object of curiosity and a little bit of fear for the timid mare, who had to stand at the entry gate for a full five minutes before she felt brave enough to gallop. Harley complained through those five minutes, saying that they preferred the bucking broncs to this mare. 

"All I'm saying is, it would be a lot more interesting for me if she threw in a buck every now and then." they said, patting the filly's sweaty neck after her workout. 

"I'm just thankful she didn't spook in the middle of the track." Nala commented dryly, clipping a lead rope to her bit and leading her to the walking ring. "Hope she's not a mess day of the race."

"Jinx! You jinxed us!" Harley yelled from the other end of the stables. 

Tango, naturally, was a bit of a mess. 

And despite Harley's best efforts, she still skittered to the schooling ring, fretted through tacking up, lathered up a storm on the poor post pony's shoulder, and bounced her way into the starting gate, all while looking dainty, graceful, and airy. Nala grumbled that her horse looked better having a panic attack than she did as she folded her magazine and leaned on her truck, waiting for the race to start.
